Heal A Wounded Heart with Pilar Jennings

Early on in her clinical practice, psychoanalyst Pilar Jennings was presented with a particularly difficult case: a six-year-old girl who, traumatized by loss, had stopped speaking. Feeling challenged by the limitations of her training to respond effectively to the isolating effect of this young girl’s childhood trauma, Pilar decided to take an unconventional treatment approach. She invited her friend Lama Pema, a kind Tibetan Buddhist monk, who had also experienced his own life-shaping trauma at a very young age into their sessions. The result is a fascinating case study that illustrates how Western psychology and Buddhist teachings can intersect to provide a unique therapeutic approach in healing childhood wounds.

Join Sylvia and her guest Pilar Jennings, author of To Heal A Wounded Heart: The Transformative Power of Buddhism and Psychotherapy in Action, as they discuss the importance of healing our wounded inner child.

About the Guest: Pilar Jennings, PHD.

Pilar Jennings, PhD, is a psychoanalyst in private practice with a focus on the clinical applications of Buddhist meditation. She has been working with patients and their families through the Harlem Family Institute since 2004. A visiting lecturer at Union Theological Seminary, and a guest lecturer at Columbia University.

Pilar Jennings is the author of Mixing Minds: The Power of Relationships in Psychoanalysis and Buddhism and her latest book To Heal a Wounded Heart: The Transformative Power of Buddhism and Psychotherapy in Action.

Building A Bigger Table For An All-Inclusive Church with John Pavlovitz

No one likes to eat alone; to approach a table filled with people, only to be told that despite the open chairs there isn’t room for you. The rejection stings. Yet, this is exactly what Christian churches have been saying to far too many people for far too long.

Can churches, and their members, learn to welcome and accept LGBT inclusion, gender equality, racial tensions, global concerns, and theological shifts? Can they extend unconditional welcome and acceptance in a world increasingly marked by bigotry, fear, and exclusion?

John Pavlovitz, author of A Bigger Table says the answer is, Yes!

Join Sylvia and her guest, John Pavlovitz, as they discuss what happens when churches practice radical hospitality, total authenticity, messy diversity, and create agenda-free communities.

About the Guest: John Pavlovitz

John Pavlovitz is a pastor, writer, and activist from Wake Forest, North Carolina. In the past four years his blog Stuff That Needs To Be Said has reached a diverse worldwide audience. A 20-year veteran in the trenches of local church ministry, John is committed to equality, diversity, and justice – both inside and outside of faith communities.

John Pavoivitz is the author of A Bigger Table: Building Messy, Authentic, and Hopeful Spiritual Communities and his new book titled Hope and Other Superpowers which releases on November 6th. John is also a regular contributor to The Huffington Post, Relevant Magazine, ChurchLeaders.com, and The Good Men Project.
