Comedy as “Sacred Space” and Cartoons on the Radio – How Levity Uplifts Us in Unfunny Times

A Conversation with Comedian Alicia Dattner and Cartoonist Brian Narelle

“Why humor and politics? Because there’s definitely something funny going on.” — Swami Beyondananda

What is the state of satire when “reality” is more perversely paradoxical than any comedy routine?

What happens when much of comedy censorship comes from … the left?

What’s funny in a world that has become insanely serious?

To address these sticky icky questions on this week’s show, I’ve invited two of my favorite “cosmic comic co-hearts”, Alicia Dattner and Brian Narelle.

Alicia Dattner is a “wise gal” who’s done everything from stand-up to comedy coaching to solo shows, including One Life Stand, The Oy of Sex, and Eat, Pray, Laugh! She was voted Best Comedian in both the SF Weekly and SF Bay Guardian Reader’s Polls. Her fifth show, One Life Stand, a standup comedy special, is currently touring. She’s also creator of The Spiritual Comedy Festival and teaches highly-acclaimed storytelling workshops under the banner Solo Showdown. http://soloshowdown.com and http://aliciadattner.com

Alicia has also made the bold statement that the comedy club is “sacred space” where “anything goes”.

Brian Narelle is a multi-talented comic genius who began his career as the star of the cult classic film, Dark Star, and has been a successful puppeteer, animator and cartoonist. As puppeteer, he worked for the award winning children’s programs, Bingo and Molly and Buster and Me featured on the Discovery Channel and NBC. In addition to illustrating numerous books (including my own Swami For Precedent), he has taught cartooning at the Charles Schultz Museum. Brian now has a new book of cartoons, Surviving Trump — The Lyin’ King. His work can be found online at: https://www.narellecartoons.com/

Nick Brana - Activate “the Progressive Majority”

An Independent Movement to Activate "the Progressive Majority" -  A Conversation with Nick Brana - Founder, and National Director of Movement for a People’s Party

"The Republicans?  They've sold their soul to the devil.  Not the Democrats.  They've just RENTED theirs." -- Swami Beyondananda

A couple of weeks ago, we had as our guest on Wiki Politiki Erik Fogg, whose book, Wedged: How You Became a Tool of the Partisan Political Establishment and How to Start Thinking for Yourself Again talks about how both political tribes are mobilized by fear and anger to take polarized, intractable positions.  A recent book by a Yale professor John Bargh, Before You Know It: The Unconscious Reasons We Do What We Do, goes even further in suggesting that liberals can be made more conservative by invoking fear, and conservatives more liberal by creating a sense of safety.

Which brings us to this week's guest, Nick Brana.

Nick Brana is the founder and National Director of the Movement for a People’s Party, a coalition of progressive organizations for a "nationally-viable party for working people". Nick had been the National Political Outreach Coordinator with the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign, where he lobbied the superdelegates and elected officials for Bernie, organized his political meetings and planned convention activities. He went on to become a founding member of Our Revolution and its first Electoral Manager, where he created an endorsement plan and assembled the candidates.

However, in early 2017, Nick Brana quit Our Revolution and launched his own independent campaign to "draft Bernie" as an independent candidate, citing the intractability of the Democratic Party apparatus and their resistance to genuine systemic change.  At a time when more and more people -- particularly young folks -- are turned off to both parties, can a "third party" become an actual "first party"?

Will this party merely triangulate progressive voters, and ensure Donald Trump a second term?  Or can the platform bring together progressives and populists who voted for Trump because the Democrats have been "tone deaf" to their needs?  Can their platform create enough unity, coherence and "safety" to bring conservative populists on boards as well?  What IS the strategy to take advantage of the growing disgust with the two parties that currently control our politics?

Tune in to this lively discussion on how we the people can "overgrow" the current pay-to-play political duopoly this Tuesday, June 12th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET:

Or, find us on the Wiki archives on Wednesday: http://wikipolitiki.com/archives/

Spiritual Climate Change: Beyond “Hopium”, Denial and Despair

Spiritual Climate Change: Beyond “Hopium”, Denial and Despair

A Conversation with Michael Dowd, Author of Thank God for Evolution, and Michael Mielke, Author of Delusions and Contradictions

“Is climate change real? Well, I just took a vacation in the future and spent a fabulous week in Tropicanada.” — Swami Beyondananda

As the two political parties keep our attention focused on “identity issues”, the elephant (and donkey) in the living room is the IDENTICAL ISSUE we face — our human civilization spinning itself outside the web of life. And as Swami has said, if we lose the Earth there goes the GDP.

This week, two Mikes share the mike to speak freely and frankly about the climate change issue — how and why it has been ignored and side-stepped, and why our species has a spiritual imperative to face the music and find new ways of dancing together. As Michael Mielke points out in his recent e-book, Delusions and Contradictions, neither conservatives nor progressives have REALLY confronted climate change, and the changes we need to make to preserve some form of human civilization on our planet.

The conservative form of denial is more blatant and obvious — dismiss the whole thing as a liberal plot to enrich George Soros. The progressive camp, says Mielke, is strung out on two forms of “hopium”. First, there is what he calls the “Tinkerbell Effect”, the hope that the magic of technology will come up with a fix that will allow us to continue using the energy we are using and sustain a civilization. The other form of denial is imagining that the reforms of the Paris Agreement (which we are not even following) will be enough to prevent the collapse of our civilization and mitigate the climate disasters that are already happening.

Meanwhile, there are those climate change activists who have fallen into despair and resignation, as they sense that it’s too late, and that society will not and cannot make the necessary changes in time.

That brings our second Mike to the mike … Michael Dowd is an Evangelical Christian (don’t worry, his wife Connie Barlow is an atheist scientist) who has written a wise book with the whimsical title, Thank God for Evolution. Dowd maintains that it is our spiritual imperative to step away from otherworldly conversations about the nature of God, to focus on the this-worldly reality of “the God of nature.” Dowd sees evolution as a “reality-based creation story” where “ecology becomes theology” and religion focuses not on the miracles of the past but how we collectively become “the savior of our future” — the “prodigal species.

If you find yourself stuck in hopium, denial or despair about the future of human life on the planet, join us for this sober yet inspiring conversation about what can be done NOW while we are still in “pre-disaster” mode — and how we can honestly engage friends and family in this life-or-death conversation.

How the Two-Party System Gave the American People a Wedgie

How the Two-Party System Gave the American People a Wedgie

A Conversation with Erik Fogg, Author of Wedged: How You Became a Tool of the Partisan Political Establishment and How to Start Thinking for Yourself Again

“We have a deeply-divided body politic in this country. Half the population believes our elections are broken, the other half believe they are fixed.” — Swami Beyondananda

I know I have shared this story before, but given our current political “shituation”, it’s worth sharing again. On the Sunday before the 2016 election, 60 Minutes gathered 25 prospective voters from across the political spectrum together, and asked them, “Who will be voting for the candidate of their choice this Tuesday?”

Three people raised their hands.

They were then asked, “And how many of you will be voting AGAINST another candidate?”

The remaining 22 people raised their hands.

How did this come about? And how is it that the American public has become so polarized that the only thing they agree on is that the system isn’t working?

Wedge issues, says this week’s guest, Erik Fogg. He is the author of Wedged: How You Became a Tool of the Partisan Political Establishment and How to Start Thinking for Yourself Again, and he maintains that the “political industrial complex” that benefits from a polarized electorate has insured that the divisive “wedge” issues that KEEP us polarized are kept front and center.

His book — and this interview — offers heartening information on how we the people can liberate ourselves from our “addiction” to being adrenalized by polarizing issues, and become wiser citizens working in accord.

Erik Fogg is a graduate of MIT, where he studied mechanical engineering and political science. He earned his Masters of Science, co-authoring a number of academic papers while a student and while working with MIT, Harvard, the United Nations, and other NGOs on conflict resolution. He then spent four years as an operations and management consultant, improving organizational effectiveness and culture for a number of clients across North America.

Erik currently resides in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is the CEO of MidTide Media, and co-founder of Something to Consider, focused on improving American political dialogue by undermining the destructive mindsets that ail politics in the US.

Here is a quote from his book:

“A wedge has been driven into American politics by powerful political, social, and economic incentives that are very difficult to overcome. The middle ground has fallen out of the political process, leaving power in the hands of hardline partisans that frame the national agenda and direct our political energy towards emotionally satisfying–but politically unproductive–tribal warfare.”

Find out how we HAVE liberated ourselves from at least one polarizing issue, and what we can do to shift the energy from tribe vs. tribe to one big tribe, where we learn to “disagree productively.”

The Future of Children - Providing a Love-Based Education for Every Child

The Future of Children – Providing a Love-Based Education for Every Child

A Conversation with Educational Pioneer Phil Moore, Author of “The Future of Children”

“We need to evolve from children of God to adults of good.” — Swami Beyondananda

There was a joke years ago about how we will know when the world is right-side-up: Schools and children will get all the resources they require to thrive, and the Air Force will have to hold a bake sale every time they want to build a new bomber.

This joke has gotten less and less funny over the years, particularly now when the word “school” is too often paired with the word “shooting”. As the toll seems to be mounting from our societal “priorities” that put nurturance last, here comes a book that not only asserts that children will have a future, but tells us a “love-based education” is the key to that future.

Meet Phil Moore, who, as director of Upland Hills School for over 40 years, helped provide that love-based education, in an environment where each child is known, and both freedom and structure are used appropriately. Influenced by J. Krishnamurti and R. Buckminster Fuller — who called the process of ordinary education “de-genuising” — Upland Hills embraced the task of bringing forth the genius in each and every child, in the context of nature and community.

Upland Hills School is truly a one-of-a-kind — and now that Phil is director emeritus, he has taken on the mission to export the principles, practices and lessons of Upland Hills School to the world at large. In the spirit of Bucky Fuller, he has named his platform for transforming education “trimtab” — which is the small device that moves the rudder and helps the ship change course.

If you’re curious about how children can become citizens of an evolutionary future, and how teachers, parents, grandparents and caring adults can create a loving learning atmosphere for kids, tune in this Tuesday, May 22nd at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET.

We Humans Have MORE THAN ENOUGH to Transition to an Ecological Civilization!

We Humans Have MORE THAN ENOUGH to Transition to an Ecological Civilization!

A Conversation with Timothy Nobles, Author of MORE THAN ENOUGH

“I consider myself an optimistic realist — to me, the glass isn’t 95% empty, it’s 5% full.” — Swami Beyondananda

As a follow-up to our conversation with David Korten last week in regards to what the Chinese call “an ecological civilization”, this week’s guest Timothy Nobles challenges conventional and even unconventional wisdom by asserting:

We have much more than enough capability and resources for all of us humans to live in graceful abundance, with no one who is now prosperous needing to revert to a less soul-satisfying lifestyle. Simultaneously, we have more than enough of everything we require to rapidly convert to a skillful symbiotic relationship with the Earth and with all other life forms on Earth that we can sustain for hundreds of millions of years.

Whoa, wait a minute.

Just about everyone else who is paying attention is lamenting how UNSUSTAINABLE our current system is, and how even the most optimistic projections conclude human society will have to live with more scarce resource. According to Global Footprint Network, we currently use the equivalent of 1.7 earths worth of resources. So where will this “graceful abundance” come from?

An engineer by training, Timothy says it will come from radically reapportioning and re-purposing what we use now, on the basis of a new (or maybe old) rule for humanity: The Golden Rule.

While that might sound idealistic, Timothy’s life experience is very much in the “real-dealistic” realm. He lived for ten years on The Farm, one of the largest and most effective experimental communities that emerged from the spiritual revolution of the 1960s. After leaving The Farm, he worked for many years in the R&D laboratories of the world’s largest technology companies, including IBM, Intel, and Texas Instruments. His web site is: http://www.morethanenoughnow.org

In his playfully illustrated and well-reasoned soon-to-be-released book MORE THAN ENOUGH: How We Enroll Billions of People to Implement Global Prosperity and Restore the Earth, Timothy cheerfully and relentlessly offers plenty of evidence of our capabilities — not just as technologists, but as caring and compassionate humans. For the first time in recorded human history, he asserts, we have the means to self-organize in a “non-dominational” way … and to experience true equality and individual and societal fulfillment.

Is he a hopeless hopium addict or is he on to something?

Tune in and decide for yourself, this Tuesday, May 15th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET.

Navigating the Human Transition to an Ecological Civilization

A Conversation with Economist and Author David Korten

“Here is the REAL bottom line: If we destroy the planet, there goes the GDP.” — Swami Beyondananda

David Korten’s life and work can probably be summed up in this quote: “We will prosper in the pursuit of life, or we will perish in the pursuit of money. The choice is ours.”

As the unfolding of environmental disasters continues, the window of opportunity for this choice seems to be narrowing. But again, another quote, this one from Samuel Johnson: “When a man knows he is to be hanged… it concentrates his mind wonderfully.”

As guest on this week’s Wiki Politiki show, David Korten offers his latest — and surprising — views on our pathway toward “ecological civilization” a pathway he says, that goes right to and through China. Will China lead when a Trump-misled USA won’t? Tune in and hear what David has to say.

Dr. David C. Korten is the founder and president of the Living Economies Forum; co-founder, board member, and board chair emeritus of YES! Magazine; an associate fellow of the Institute for Policy Studies; and a full member of the Club of Rome.

Korten worked for more than thirty-five years in the field of international business development before he turned away from the establishment to become a leading critic of what he calls “global suicide economy”. He now devotes his life to advancing the global transition now underway to a living Earth economy organized around deeply democratic self-governing living communities in which people work in co-productive partnership with the rest of nature to meet the needs of all.

In 1998, he and his wife Fran moved to from New York City to Bainbridge Island, Washington where Fran became executive director and publisher of YES! Magazine and David wrote in succession The Post-Corporate World: Life After Capitalism (1999); The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community (2006); Agenda for a New Economy: From Phantom Wealth to Real Wealth (2009, 2010), and Change the Story, Change the Future: A Living Economy for a Living Earth (2015).

How the “Liberator Trickster Redeemer” – Can Save Us From the Con Man

A Conversation with Visionary Activist Caroline Casey

“If you don’t like the current programming, turn off your TV and tell-a-vision instead .” — Swami Beyondananda

Wiki Politiki listeners, you’re in for a real treat this week as we converse with “visionary activist”, astrologer, mythologist and wise woman Caroline Casey. The host of the Visionary Activist Radio Show on Pacifica (KPFA in Berkeley and KPFK in LA) for over 22 years, Caroline is also the “Chief Trickster at Coyote Network News, a mythological news service for the Liberating Trickster within us all.”

Caroline’s rich “uncommontary” weaves politics, mythology, astrology, and her wonderful way with language into a sharp and yet encouraging view of our current “shituation.”

In these times of manipulative political narratives, Caroline will help us recognize how the “trickster redeemer” can liberate us from the con artists who nowadays seem to be the only artists who aren’t starving. Most importantly, she helps liberate us from ways we con ourselves, particularly when we become so righteously convinced of our own “rightness” that we miss seeing our own shadow.

A native of Washington DC, Caroline is the last of five children born to an Irish-Democrat-New-Deal Congressman, and a politically active Yankee Swede. She rode on her Dad’s shoulders to Kennedy’s snowy Inauguration, and held his hand in speaker of the House McCormick’s office at Kennedy’s funeral. As she quips, “I grew up around politics, so I was disabused as a child.”

She began studying astrology as a teenager, and considers it one of the great “meta-languages” to help humanity find its place in the cosmos. She has also immersed herself in magic, mythology, literature and social activism, and weaves them all together to — in her words — “compost tyranny into a nutrient for a Renaissance of Reverent Ingenuity, and compost the hubris of humanism into the truth of animism.”

Caroline still lives in the Washington, D.C. area (she calls it a “spiritual hardship post”) and now applies everything she has learned and is learning to bring wisdom, compassion and playfulness to what she calls “the dire beauty of now.”

In addition to her weekly radio show and conference presentations, Caroline does private astrological readings, to guide all to their own autonomy. She is also launching a new 7-week course, Way of the Trickster https://shiftnetwork.infusionsoft.com/go/tm/swamib launching on May 8th. Details for everything can be found at: www.CoyoteNetworkNews.com

Join us for a rollicking adventure into activism and mysticism at a time when we need both! This Tuesday, May 1st at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET.

Paul Levy - Heartening News on Our Current Political Shituation

Paul Levy – Heartening News on Our Current Political Shituation – Material Reality MAY NOT Actually Exist!

A Conversation with Jungian Author Paul Levy

“What is reality? It’s simple. Reality is reality TV without the TV.” — Swami Beyondananda

A number of years ago, I picked up a book with a fascination title — The Madness of George Bush. The author Paul Levy, a Jungian theorist who had a life-changing personal experience that helped him recognize the dream-like nature of life and reality, suggested that the scenario playing in the world was a reflection of the inner workings of the human psyche. The not-so-mellow drama being out-pictured was a way for our species to come to grips with the inner pictures that have subconsciously ruled us for so long.

Paul Levy’s next book on Wetiko (the Native American word for “evil” and vampiric energies) went further and deeper in turning reality “inside out.” Paul Levy’s latest book, The Quantum Revelation which he describes as “A radical synthesis of the realms of quantum physics, alchemy, shamanism, Buddhism, Kabbalah, mystical Christianity, and the works of C.G. Jung and Philip K. Dick,” takes “reality as dream” to the next level — suggesting that quantum mechanics proves that material reality doesn’t actually exist.

So, hey we have nothing to worry about!

Seriously, Paul Levy is one of the deepest and most original thinkers on the planet, and his website proclaims his mission — Awaken in the Dream.

The most challenging thing about this interview is to confine it all to just one hour.

If you’re ready to expand your current concept of “reality” and see how this higher and deeper view can transform our current political conversation, join us this Tuesday, April 24th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET.

Can the “Food Revolution” Unite Us?

Can the “Food Revolution” Unite Us?

A Conversation with Food Activist Ocean Robbins

“We need to shift the focus from ‘identity’ issues that keep us divided to the ‘identical’ issues that unite us — clean food, clean air, clean water and clean government.” — Swami Beyondananda

Until now the two-party duopoly has kept us divided by “identity” issues so that we have been unable to unite around “identical” issues, those all of us share in common like clean air, clean water, clean food and clean government.

As more people from both the conservative and progressive “tribes” begin to awaken around the need for unadulterated, nutritious food — and also begin to explore medicine beyond drugs and surgery — there is a new potential for a unifying force that can “overgrow” the misrepresentations by big Pharma and agribusiness.

Our guest this week, Ocean Robbins, is a leading voice in food education and helping the public discern real information from industry “impropaganda”. In doing so, he has found himself working across ideological lines and creating some surprising alliances. Ocean grew up in a “food family.” His grandfather was co-founder of Baskin Robbins ice cream. His dad, John Robbins, was a pioneering food educator and activist who rejected dairy products in favor of a vegan diet, and wrote a best-selling book, Diet For A New America.

Ocean has been an activist, organizer and entrepreneur since he was a child. As founder of Food Revolution Network, has helped people choose cleaner and more nutritious foods, regardless of whether they are vegans or omnivores.

In this week’s conversation, Ocean will discuss this burgeoning clean food movement and its potential for connecting us beyond the divide. He will explore both the possibilities for and the barriers to transpartisan engagement around healthy foods and natural medicine, and share some success stories. He will also share some details on the upcoming Food Revolution Summit.

If you’re curious about how clean and healthy food can help build a strong body politic 12-ways, join us this Tuesday, April 17th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET.
