Chase Palmieri – Crowd-Sourcing the News: Start-Up “Credder” Turns Readers Into Reviewers
Airing Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM EST
Interview with Chase Palmieri, Co-Founder of Credder
“Love lives in our heart, beliefs lie in our head.” — Swami Beyondananda
At a time when disinformation, misinformation and missing information characterizes much of the news, and the trust in media is at an all-time low, might it be time to access the “wisdom of crowds”?
Our Wiki Politiki guest this week, Chase Palmieri, thinks so. He and his partner, Austin Walter, have founded a new platform, Credder, that they’ve branded “Rotten Tomatoes” for the news. Credder – rooted obviously in the word “credibility” — allows readers to review articles for veracity and bias, and then post these reviews on the Credder site. Writers are then rated on these criteria, and reviewers too are held accountable by THEIR ratings.
The site says:
We believe news should compete for credibility, not clicks. Together on Credder’s news review platform, we can hold media accountable and accelerate the news industry’s transition from clicks to credibility. Credder works by allowing journalists and the public to review articles, creating credibility ratings for every article, author, and outlet. We believe this is the only way, without censoring content, to establish a clear incentive for quality in online news.
Chase Palmieri is CEO and Cofounder of the news review site Credder.com. and is also CoHost of the nonpartisan media watchdog Project Censored’s national radio show and podcast. He has a degree in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management from Chico State University, and he and his father own Risibisi Restaurant in Petaluma, California- winner of 12 straight Michelin Guide awards. His focus is on growing Credder and bringing their “Rotten Tomatoes for news” service to readers everywhere.
Can Credder bring credibility to news? How do they plan to deal with “confirmation bias” in readers, and folks who simply won’t believe anything that they don’t already agree with? Will they help empower and fund a new breed of truly independent journalists who won’t need to work for corporate news sources? Will they help create a more discerning and intelligent readership?
If you’re curious, please tune in this Tuesday, February 18th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET. http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/

Steve Wagner – All You Need Is Myth – Can the “Soundtrack of Our Time” Help Us Heal the Shadow and See the Light?
Aired Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM EST
Interview with Music Mythologist Steve Wagner, author of “All You Need Is Myth: The Beatles and the Gods of Rock”
“Of course love is more powerful than fear. Otherwise we’d be singing ‘All You Need is Fear.” — Swami Beyondananda
In his study of “spontaneous remission,” Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona suggested that these unexplained anomalous healings were often accompanied by what he called a “change of story.” Given the dire “shituation” we as a civilization, a species and a world find ourselves in, maybe we need a collective change of story, a “spontaneous remissioning” so to speak.
So … where might we go to find such a story?
Hint: All you need is love.
Our guest this week, “music mythologist” Steve Wagner offers an interesting and compelling thesis: That during the latter half of the 20th century, mythology “came alive” as the ancient archetypes cited by Joseph Campbell emerged through the Beatles, and other rock icons like the Stones, Elvis, Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Jim Morrison, the Who, and Brian Wilson.
Unlike ancient and traditional mythologies, based on story and faith, here were real flesh-and-blood contemporaries who brought these archetypes to life, and gave us purpose and meaning. Consider that Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign song was Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow.” (I suppose if the current administration had to pick a Fleetwood Mac theme, it would have to be “Tell Me Lies”, right?)
Mythology – from Greek to Nordic to Celtic to Indigenous – has always provided a stage for darkness and light to dance together. Can the modern mythos of rock culture help us shine a light on the current darkness?
Join us and find out!
Steve Wagner is a veteran San Francisco media personality, and member of the San Francisco Film Critic’s Circle. He was co-host, writer, and executive producer of the Bay Area television programs Reel Life and Filmtrip, reviewing over 1,000 films and interviewing over 300 actors, directors, writers, and musicians. In the 1980s, he was singer and guitarist of the Backsliders, a touring rock band that performed over eight hundred shows and opened for numerous national acts. For a decade, Steve Wagner was a director of the San Francisco Art Exchange, a gallery specializing in rock & roll photography and original album cover art. He brokered sales of many of the world’s most famous album cover original artworks, including Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon.
Steve Wagner has ghostwritten or collaborated on several published books, contributed articles on music, film, and popular culture to numerous publications, and presented lectures and workshops on music, art, and mythology in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, and Boston. His book All You Need is Myth: The Beatles and Gods of Rock (Waterside, 2019), a study of the classic rock era through the lens of classical mythology, is the product of ten years of research and composition.
If you’re curious how the Beatles and other “Gods of Rock” brought ancient mythology to life – and how this living mythology can inform our purpose in challenging times, please tune in this Tuesday, February 11th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET. http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/

Visioning A Better America – A Citizens Conference Held in the Halls of Congress April 6th-10th, 2020
Aired Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM EST
Interview with Consultant and Conference Convener Richard Margolies
“If you don’t like the current programming, turn off your TV and tell-a-vision instead.” — Swami Beyondananda
In these most contentious times, what if there were a way for “we the people” to gather above and beyond the battlefield conversation and focus on the common purpose we share?
The Bible says where there is no vision, the people perish. And at this moment, our democratic republic looks awfully perishable. Fortunately, a paradigm-breaking conference happening in Washington, D.C. this April looks to – in the Swami’s words – “bring left and right front and center to face the music and dance together.”
As the conference website says, only citizens can change society:
“The purpose of the conference is to create a conversation about what we as a people and as a nation can become.”
Another quote:
“Politicians offer policies that are like medication to cure fears of the future, but these policies only address symptoms. The cure requires a vision of an America based on the values of the Declaration and the Constitution designed for the new reality that is radically different from anything imagined by Jefferson or Hamilton.”
Bringing together solutionaries and evolutionaries to “tell a vision” and ground that vision in reality, this conference reflects the “evolution of revolution” from something led by a charismatic leader to something that emerges from the grassroots up and brings forth the uncommon wisdom of common people.
Our guest this week is Richard Margolies, conference convener, who has spent more than a half-century as psychologist, political activist, researcher and consultant.
Richard Margolies, PhD is a clinical psychologist and leadership consultant. He has worked on numerous research and consulting projects in the US and Europe with Michael Maccoby and other associates over 45 years. Richard consulted to the senior military and civilian leadership of the US Army Corps of Engineers for 15 years. He wrote the Corps’ Learning Organization Doctrine, based on the thinking of the Maccoby Group and Gen. David Petraeus’ Counterinsurgency Doctrine. He designed and taught the Corps’ Leadership Course in Districts of the Corps around the US. He has consulted with public, private, and international organizations in the US, Sweden, and Ireland. He worked with Michael Maccoby and associates on the Robert Wood Johnson-funded research on leadership in exemplary healthcare systems. This research was the basis of the Jossey-Bass 2013 book, Transforming Healthcare Leadership, authored by Michael Maccoby, Cliff and Jane Norman, and Richard. He is on the Board of the Lincoln Group of DC, and leads its Lincoln Study Group.
If you want to find out how Americans can discover common purpose and then use that purpose to enact policies for the betterment of all, please tune in this Tuesday, February 4th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET. http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/

Robert Strock – Awareness That Heals – Cultivating the Internal Resources For External Challenges
Aired Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM EST
Interview with Psychologist and Educator Robert Strock, Author of “Awareness That Heals”
“We all have the wherewithal for change. Having the aware-with-all is the all-important first step.” — Swami Beyondananda
One of my favorite cartoons of all time is a two-panel piece that I first saw in a psychotherapist’s waiting room. In the first panel, a boy being swept under in a raging river calls out to his dog, “Lassie, get help!”
In the second panel we see Lassie on a psychiatrist’s couch.
We are living in the “self-help” generation, and yet so much of this self-help comes from outside ourselves. Well, what if we actually DID develop the inner resources to be truly helpful to ourselves? What if we able to find and cultivate an inner voice that is wise and loving, gentle yet firm, that speaks softly yet with authority? And what if this voice can provide comfort and wisdom, not just for our internal crises, but in dealing with the external ones as well?
Our guest on Wiki Politiki this week Robert Strock, a psychotherapist in practice for half a century, developed what he calls “awareness that heals” while dealing with a dire personal crisis. 25 years ago, a hereditary condition required him undergo a kidney transplant. The medications he had to take to prevent the new organ from being rejected by his system created a chemical and emotional imbalance that left him alienated from his own emotions and own self. “It was as though I had a ‘heart-ectomy’. I felt as if my heart had been taken away.”
In response to his crisis, he was able to find an inner guide that allowed him to accept his feelings and hear the messages clearly from the intuitive intelligence of his own heart. (Or as Chris Padgett put it in his book of the same name, “I’m not okay, you’re not okay … but it’s okay!”) By cultivating what he terms “the friendly mind”, Robert Strock saw his way through his own crisis, and found similar heartening results with his therapy clients.
Robert Strock, L.M.F.T. has been in private practice for nearly 50 years, and is the originator of “Humanistic Spirituality”, a way to access “invisible” resources without the burden of religious dogma. He has co-f0unded the Global Bridge Foundation whose purpose is to “contribute to the creation of a more compassionate, just, and peaceful world that honors the dignity of all beings.” He is also the originator or “Psycho-Economics” (not to be confused with the “psycho economics” that seems to have been in charge of our system for the past two generations) and more recently “Psycho-Politics”, both of which help us use our inner resources to face and transform global challenges.
If you’re ready to discover and cultivate an inner resource you probably didn’t know you had, please tune in this Tuesday, January 28th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET. http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/

Norman Solomon – The Oligarchs Among Us – The Battle for the Soul of the Democratic Party
Aired Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM EST
Interview with Journalist, Author and Media Critic Norman Solomon
“We have two political parties in this country – the Democratic Party and the un-democratic party.” — Swami Beyondananda
If they saw what the Republican Party has devolved to, Republican icons like Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, and even Barry Goldwater would flip in their crypts. The blatant heartlessness, self-centered short-sightedness, and downright insanity of a political party that has become a toxic cult, would certainly make the Democrats seem like a sane and viable alternative, right?
Well, here’s the elephant – and donkey – in the living room. In a political system where it costs the average Senator $14,000 to finance their re-election campaign, the oligarchs have a well-established foothold in that party too.
Our guest on Wiki Politiki this week, journalist, activist and author Norman Solomon has been involved with progressive politics for decades, working to move the Democratic Party beyond the “identity issues” that they have used to cobble coalitions, to addressing the “identical issues” we all face – like a clean environment and economic justice.
Norman Solomon is an American journalist, media critic, author and activist. His dozen books include “War Made Easy: How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death.” A full-length documentary film, narrated by Sean Penn, was based on “War Made Easy.” The New York Times review called the film “ultimately persuasive” and said: “Many of its arguments have been made before but Mr. Solomon digs deeper and hammers harder.”
Solomon is the founder of the Institute for Public Accuracy, a consortium of policy researchers and analysts. He is IPA’s executive director and the coordinator of its ExposeFacts program.
He is co-founder and national coordinator of the online organization RootsAction.org, which now has 1.5 million active supporters. In 2016, Solomon was elected as a Bernie Sanders delegate to the Democratic National Convention, where he was the coordinator of the independent Bernie Delegates Network. In 2012, running for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives from California’s 2nd Congressional District, he came within 0.1 percent of getting through the primary. Solomon wrote the nationally syndicated “Media Beat” weekly column from 1992 to 2009. He is a longtime associate of the media watch group FAIR (Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting).
Solomon has appeared as a guest on many media outlets including the “PBS News Hour,” CNN, MSNBC, Fox News Channel, “Democracy Now,” C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal,” public radio’s “Marketplace,” and NPR’s “All Things Considered.” His op-ed articles have appeared in a range of newspapers including the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Newsday, New York Times, Boston Globe, Miami Herald, USA Today, Philadelphia Inquirer, Baltimore Sun and The Hill. His articles have also appeared in the International Herald Tribune, Canada’s Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star.
Solomon’s books include “Made Love, Got War,” “Target Iraq,” “Wizards of Media Oz: Behind the Curtain of Mainstream News,” “The Trouble With Dilbert: How Corporate Culture Gets the Last Laugh,” “False Hope: The Politics of Illusion in the Clinton Era,” “The Power of Babble: The Politician’s Dictionary of Buzzwords and Doubletalk for Every Occasion,” and “Killing Our Own: The Disaster of America’s Experience With Atomic Radiation.”
If you’re interested in learning how we can put the “democratic” in Democratic Party, and not just take America back, but take her forward, please tune in this Tuesday, January 21th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET. http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/

Lenore Goldman – How to Get Off the Battlefield – And WIN the Battleground States
Aired Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM EST
Interview with Activist and Campaign Consultant Lenore Goldman
“It’s time to get off the old battlefield and on to a new playing field.” — Swami Beyondananda
In the wake of the 2016 elections, millions of Americans were awakened to what they perceived as a battle for the heart and soul of America. Many became politically active for the first time, joining in the various “resist” movements, and becoming involved in supporting “battleground state” campaigns in the 2018 Midterm elections.
This being a Presidential election year, everyone is focused on the national election and the national issues – but maybe there is a more fertile field to cultivate. Our guest this week, veteran activist and consultant Lenore Goldman, shows us where the REAL change takes place – the grassroots, particularly statehouse elections.
At a time when the power of money overwhelmingly controls the airwaves, the new playing field is “on the ground”, the door-to-door campaigns where real people talk with real people, and where people who have been disenfranchised by and are cynical about the system can be motivated to vote.
Consider how much energy is wasted on social media, throwing slings and barbs at folks on the other side who will never be convinced. What if that energy was used in a focused way to bring new voters to the polls and swing the swing states from the grassroots up? What if instead of arguing with folks who don’t agree with us, we spent that time encouraging voters who do?
Lenore Goldman will tell us why and how to get off that old battlefield, and mobilize the power of people to prevail over the power of money.
Lenore Goldman has consulted on strategy, capacity, sustainability and social impact with diverse organizations, coalitions, campaigns and initiatives for over 20 years. She was Operations Director for the 2018 Michigan ballot initiative that ended gerrymandering. She has worked on battleground state election and voter mobilization strategies with such groups as Indivisible, Sister District, Swing Left, East Bay Activist Alliance and Fems for Dems. From the grassroots to the boardroom, Lenore’s experience across race, class, gender and culture enables her to build leadership at all levels and identify opportunities for greater impact.
If you’re ready to make a REAL difference in creating “political climate change” that will bring about “heartland security”, please tune in this Tuesday, January 14th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET. http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/

Judah Freed – Making Global Sense – A New “Common Sense” For the People of the World
Aired Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM EST
Interview with Journalist and Activist Judah Freed, Author of “Making Global Sense”
“Imagine … we the people of the world coming to a commonly-sensed, uncommonly sensible consensus – we would rather live by the Golden Rule than die by the rule of gold.” — Swami Beyondananda
What would happen if a billion people worldwide took a stand in recognition that we humans are indeed cells in a larger super-organism called Humanity, and then began to live their lives as if that were true?
Our Wiki Politiki guest two weeks ago, Stephan Schwartz – a lifelong student of social change movements (How to Change History BEFORE it Happens https://wikipolitiki.com/how-to-change-history-before-it-happens) — asserts that when 10% of any population has agreement around an idea, adoption of that idea becomes inevitable. And while it seems like gathering one billion people under “one big intent” is virtually impossible, it is actually VIRTUALLY more possible than ever before. We now have the technological ability to connect billions of people on the Internet at one time … and now if we cultivate the spiritual, psychological and political coherence, we may be able to achieve something that cellular biologist Bruce Lipton says is necessary for survival at this point – conscious evolution.
Our guest on Wiki Politiki this week is Judah Freed, whose forthcoming book, Making Global Sense, reports on a dozen world social trends that prove more than a billion people on earth — acting alone and together, spiritually and politically — are forming the “global sense movement,” already gathering momentum for a quantum shift in human consciousness that transforms all life on our planet. He also is updating his prior book, Global Sense, inspired by Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, which revives the ideas and ideals of the 18th century Enlightenment to champion 21st century enlightenment. His earlier editions of Global Sense won the 2005 Colorado CIPA award for the Best Personal Growth Book along with 2007 and 2012 Nautilus Awards for the Best Social Change Book.
An award-winning author and international journalist, speaker, and activist, Judah pioneered trade press coverage of new media, digital television and the Internet. His groundbreaking essays on network democracy and the social effect of interactivity itself drew invitations to speak on four continents. He currently works as Director of Publishing for RIP Medical Debt, the New York-based charity that’s abolished $1 billion in unpayable medical bills. Judah is a member of the Authors Guild, American Association of Journalists and Authors (First Amendment committee), Society of Professional Journalists, National Society of Newspaper Columnists, Independent Book Publishers Association, and the Coalition of Visionary Resources (COVR), the trade association for the Mind Body Spirit industry.
At a time when “news” (not really “news”, more like “olds”) is all about division, and groups of humans “at odds” bent on “getting even”, Judah points to unmistakable and heartening “signs of the upwising.”
If you’re ready to be encouraged and inspired, please tune in this Tuesday, January 7 at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET. http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/

Marianne Williamson’s 2020 Vision – The Evolution Is Here … If We Want It
Aired Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM EST
Interview with Author, Teacher and Presidential Candidate Marianne Williamson
“If we want to heal the cancer on the body politic, we must first address the heart disease.” — Swami Beyondananda
Four years ago, rank and file Republican voters had the courage to follow their convictions and choose an outside-the-box, non-politician candidate who they felt best represented their world view. Establishment candidates like Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, and even Ted Cruz fell by the wayside, and the Republican establishment had to fall in line behind the people’s choice, Donald Trump.
As MIT professor Otto Scharmer (http://mitsloanexperts.mit.edu/on-the-making-of-trump-the-blind-spot-that-created-him-otto-scharmer/) pointed out after the election, American voters had three choices in 2016: Move forward together, stay with the status quo, or move backward. Bernie represented moving forward together, but there is plenty of evidence that he was cheated out of the nomination (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/jun/11/democrat-primary-elections-need-reform) by the Hillary forces. Hillary, according to Scharmer, represented the status quo.
And we all know what happened. The status quo was rejected, and America took a giant step backward.
Now, here we are again, and the powers-that-be in the Democratic (sic) Party have been using their influence to marginalize and discredit the one truly “radical” candidate in the campaign, Marianne Williamson. Now by radical, I don’t mean Bernie Sanders radical or even AOC radical – I mean radical in its original meaning, getting to the root cause. Unlike any other candidate, with the possible exception of Tulsi Gabbard, Marianne’s platform – go here (https://www.marianne2020.com/) to see it for yourself – is the only one that gets to the ROOT of the “shituation”, the absence of a sane and sacred center. Consequently, the unchecked and unbalanced power of money has ruled, leaving we the people at the non-mercy of a heartless system.
And while I have always liked and admired Marianne, it wasn’t until I saw her in the second Presidential debate last summer that I appreciated the power of her voice being heard. She received genuine and heartfelt applause when she broke through fog of political clichés and challenged the Democratic Party not just to provide universal health care but to get to the root of what has been making us sick – industries putting toxins in the air, water and food, depleted soil, and a toxic economic environment where 40% of us live from paycheck to paycheck, all too often without the paycheck.
I originally envisioned this interview with Marianne as a way for her to present her platform as a vision for the coming decade that should inform the Democratic platform regardless of the candidate. Instead, she issued a challenge: If Republican voters had the courage and political will to support someone who spoke to their true agenda, how about progressives? Will progressives take up the challenge to move ahead – or fall back into some “safe” candidate who might or might not be able to defeat Donald Trump? And if by some stroke of grace, that “cancer” is excised, how about the underlying heart disease?
Half a century ago, John Lennon offered a similar challenge (https://youtu.be/CbKsgaXQy2k)
“War is over … if you want it.” Now the evolution is here … if we want it. Will we settle for a lesser evil … or stand for a greater good? If we have the courage and will and yes, faith to stand together we may never need to march again.
If you’ve written off Marianne Williamson as “unelectable” or if you are still undecided, go read her platform and see the depth of her ideas. More importantly, understand she will stand behind those ideas. Remember, Donald Trump was also “unelectable” … and if a miracle is indeed needed, who better to bring it about than a Course In Miracles teacher? Decide for yourself. Michael Dowd – Post-Doom: Confronting Climate Chaos, Beyond Denial and Despair
Aired Tuesday, December 24, 2019 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM EST
Interview with Michael Dowd, Eco-Theologian and Author of “Thank God For Evolution”
“The most dangerous predator on Earth, “Humanisaurus Wrecks” is on the brink of extinction.” — Swami Beyondananda
Sometimes I think we have created the political polarization and paralysis, the toxic culture wars, the fixations on “the pedophile elite”, and the arguments about how many sexes there are, so that we can distract ourselves from the elephant and donkey in the living room – what scientists are calling the Sixth Great Extinction.
The foreboding symptoms include climate chaos that seems to be spiraling out of control, dying oceans, societal unrest, and species loss. And at the top of the endangered species list, whether we accept it or not, is our own species. And yet we want to imagine that life will go on “as usual.”
Meanwhile, the two sides have retreated to their respective corners and are indulging in the two drugs more popular – and dangerous – than the opioids: Hopium and Deniatol. We have one force strung out on hopium – hoping that technology will save us, and another addicted to Deniatol, denying any problem exists. And many of those who have been addressing the issue for decades have all but given up.
My guest this week on Wiki Politiki, Michael Dowd offers a way through and past the denial and despair with a powerful re-frame he calls Post Doom. Writes Michael:
Doom is the mid-point between denial and regeneration…with or without us.
Post-doom is what opens up when we remember who we are, accept what is inevitable, honor our grief, and invest in what is pro-future and soul-nourishing.
A post-doom heart and mindset means living, loving, and relating honorably with full awareness that…
• There are dimensions of abrupt climate change beyond human control.
• Our ecological predicament encompasses all aspects of life.
• Climate is not our biggest problem; overshoot is (climate chaos is but a symptom).
• Human-centered measures of progress and wellbeing are ecocidal and self-terminating.
• Human-centered technology and the market are false gods, creating hell on Earth.
• The extinction of Homo colossus (rapacious industrial humanity) is both inevitable and necessary.
• The extinction of Homo sapiens this century or next cannot be ruled out.
Rev. Michael Dowd is a bestselling author, eco-theologian, sustainability activist, and TEDx speaker whose book, Thank God for Evolution, was endorsed by 6 Nobel Prize-winning scientists, noted skeptics, and by religious leaders across the spectrum.
Michael and his science writer, evolutionary educator, and eco-centric activist wife, Connie Barlow, have spoken to some 2,700 groups throughout North America since 2002. Their work provides audiences with applications of evolutionary and ecological wisdom that break through the confusions of these rapidly shifting times. Michael’s passion and legacy work is most fully expressed in his recent sermons, his 2019 video discussion course, “Pro-Future Faith: The Prodigal Species Comes Home”, and new podcast: “Post-doom: conversations exploring overshoot grief, grounding, and gratitude”.

Have you noticed that regardless of which of the two political parties you vote for, neither of them seem to be willing to confront Monsanto and agribusiness? Are you disgusted and frustrated by the stonewalling by the two-party duopoly? Are you ready to empower a truly effective “third-way” movement that can move the dial? Jerry Ashton – Ending Medical Debt – And Creating A Healthy, Caring Health Care System
Aired Tuesday, December 17, 2019 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM EST
Interview with RIP Medical Debt Co-Founder Jerry Ashton, Co-Author of “End Medical Debt”
“It’s becoming all too common nowadays to thank a surgeon by saying, ‘I shall forever be indebted to you.’” — Swami Beyondananda
As a professional comedian, it’s my job to “pump ironies” so here is an irony supplement to munch on: Americans spent $3.65 trillion on healthcare in 2018, according to a report from Axios. The amount is larger than the GDPs of such countries as Brazil, the U.K., Mexico, Spain, and Canada. And yet, we rank 27th in the world in health. In a study of 11 countries, the U.S. ranked LAST for health outcomes, equity and quality, despite having the highest per capita health earnings. The U.S. also had the highest rate of mortality amenable to healthcare, meaning more Americans die from poor care quality than any other country involved in the study.
And, it gets worse.
Not only does our health care outcome fall far short of health industry income, but the fundamental inequity – and iniquity – of the current system has created another life-threatening metastasis in our body politic: $1 trillion in unpayable medical debt in America. Medical debt causes hardships for individuals, families, communities, and the nation as a whole.
Our guest this week, Jerry Ashton, along with his End Medical Debt co-authors Robert Goff and Craig Antico created a charity, RIP Medical Debt, the charity made famous by John Oliver on HBO for abolishing $15 million in medical debt. Since 2014, RIP has purchased and forgiven more than $750 million on medical debt. The charity recently reached the milestone of abolishing $1 billion in medical debt.
Jerry Ashton has more than 40 years of experience in the credit and collections industry. In 1995, to uplift the way debtors are treated, he formed CFO Advisors in New York. His teams serviced a half billion in receivables for Fortune 500 companies. Inspired by Occupy Wall Street’s debt forgiveness campaign, he joined with Craig Antico to found RIP Medical Debt. Jerry serves as RIP’s Director of Education and Outreach.
In our conversation today, we will look at the inner workings of our “too big to fail, too broken to succeed” health care system. Since the three authors of the book have three divergent political perspectives, we will have a chance to discuss what happens when diverse viewpoints converge and converse on one issue. The authors disagree on the solutions, but they all agree on their one simple act of charity — buying and forgiving medical debt.
If you’re interested in how we arrived at our current “faith-based” health care system (“pray you don’t get sick”) and ways we can create a system that works for each and all, please tune in this Tuesday, December 17rd at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET. http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/
