Forty-seven years ago, Michael Tobin discovered his soulmate Deborah on a dance floor in Keene, New Hampshire. It took her soul a few years and an around-the-world bike trek to fully reciprocate. Riding the Edge: A Love Song to Deborah is the astonishing tale of the six-month odyssey that profoundly shaped the next 564 months of their lives together. Taking place in 1980, Michael and Deborah—an American Jew and American Arab, respectively—leave the security of their well-ordered lives as psychologists sleepwalking toward marriage and family to explore and take risks in search of life’s larger truths. What they find is a story of magnificent vistas and memorable moments that open their senses to the beauty of the world even as it also reveals the vilest of human cruelty.

My guest this week on Destination Unlimited, Michael Tobin, PhD, has been an author and playwright since he was twelve. On his way to becoming a psychologist, he was a former US Army officer, glacier climber, marathon runner, and restauranteur. Life dramatically changed for him and Deborah in 2018 when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. This book tells the story of their experiences and deep and abiding love. Time is A REALITY of life, as present as the sun coming up each morning, so it likely seems impossible to imagine we could ‘dethrone’ and stop giving our power to it. Thousands of books are written on the subject, planners are sold to help people stay organized and manage it, and we spend inordinate amounts of ‘time’ trying to invest it wisely. As we all try to squeeze every last drop of LIFE out of our journey, TIME takes on an ever-present and omnipotent role with each breath taken.

Sam will help you to: (a) make the connection between TIME and your relationship with POWER, (b) recognize how this dynamic is always pursuing and pushing you, and (c) explore how TIME covertly attaches itself to your capacity to joyfully embody each day. Instead of trying to develop new strategies to manage time, you’ll come away from this hour thinking about how to permanently alter and gain a new equanimiy with it.

This week on It’s Your Ego—Stupid!, Dr. Nick will be looking intensely at people who are living in the role of the High-Maintenance Partner. The High-Maintenance Partner requires frequent acknowledgement, acceptance, and approval from their partner, that often puts an extra strain on the relationship. There are lots of feelings of insecurity and self-doubt that drive them towards these needs .They are very sensitive to signs of rejection and can readily find them in their partner’s thoughts, words, and deeds. Even those which are quite normal and innocent. Often, their partner may have to engage in some form of damage control to help them know they’re still loved and are not going to be abandoned.

During this show, I’ll be drawing upon my book The Two Voices Within to look at the impact of higher ego vulnerability on the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of those living in the role of the High-Maintenance Partner. I’ll be looking at the “voice” of ego and the messages the High-Maintenance Partner is experiencing and working with due to the mixture of their higher ego vulnerability and their mind. Many of them, the High-Maintenance Partner is unaware of, but still exerting a powerful impact on their life and unfortunately others. I’ll also be looking at what their ego energy is doing to block the High-Maintenance Partner from hearing the voice of spirit which is rooted in their Divinity. An inability to recognize the Love, Life, and Energy—God Is, within their being, due to the great distance being created by their ego energy. When the High-Maintenance Partner is able to “hear” the mistruth contained within ego’s voice and the truth in spirit’s voice, the door to transformation can open, and the days of living in the role of High-Maintenance Partner can be ended.
